The Avengers (released as Marvel Avengers Assemble in the UK and Ireland) is a 2012 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures1, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to form a team. The group must stop Thor’s brother Loki from destroying Earth.

According to the review aggregator website Metacritic, The Avengers has received “generally favorable” reviews and assigned the film an average score of 80/100 based on reviews from 12 critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 96% approval rating with an average rating of 8.1/10, based on an aggregation of 72 reviews and offers the consensus; “With a script that never forgets its heroes’ humanity and no shortage of superpowered set pieces, The Avengers lives up to its hype — and raises the bar for Marvel at the movies”.
